Jessica’s 2nd Epilogue: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Thorns and Roses is a Romantasy novel written by Sarah J. Maas. The book series is set in Prythian and is written from Feyre Archeron’s first person point of view. Feyre, a human living in the mortal world, forcefully gets removed from her home as punishment for killing a Fae wolf. She soon finds herself away from the only family she has known, learning and adapting to life amongst High Fae and the very unique, magical creatures that she has only read and learned about through ancient folklore. But as the days progress on, she soon discovers that this land isn’t always what it seems, which leaves her making tough decisions to help those she loves survive.
This was a re-read for me in anticipation of Sarah J Maas’s upcoming release of Book #6 & #7 in the next year. My honest and most upfront opinion of this book is that it most definitely is needed to “set the scene” for the ACOTAR world. We need this book to get a sense of Feyre’s character; her strengths, her weakness, her love, her loss and most importantly to gain insight into the characters she meets along the way.
Quick thoughts:
- Writing Style: Very easy to follow, the author writes simply and descriptively as she begins to lead us through the sometimes very complex Prythian world.
- Character Development: No spoilers here but characters remain in-progress for development and I think that they are as believable as they should be for book #1 of a series. Some remain mysterious while others stay at the forefront of the story.
- Plot: I was engaged the entire book. There were of course some unexpected plot twists but I enjoyed every single one of them.
- Pacing and tone: This was a quick read for me, the pacing and tone kept me captivated. The introduction of new characters: Tamlin, Lucien, Rhysand and Amarantha as well as to creatures like, The Suriel and The Attor, and gaining insight into Prythian holidays and traditions left me excited and wanting to learn more about this ACOTAR world.
- Trigger Warnings: Violence, physical and emotional abuse, manipulation, Spicy scenes
A Court of Thorns and Roses remains a nostalgic and favorite read for me. I’d highly recommend this to readers who are looking to enjoy a world of imagination and one that is not like our own. Once you start, you will need to be dedicated and have the bandwidth to commit to quite possibly 18 books that span multiple series and worlds. This book would not be ideal for those who prefer stand-a-lone books and not interested in reading a series or who can be triggered by the trigger warnings above.
My overall opinion of this book is 4.5 star-read. Will I read this again– absolutely!
